Olivia Frances Culpo was born May 8, 1992, in Cranston, Rhode Island, to parents Susan and Peter Culpo.

Her restaurateur father is co-owner of several companies in the Boston area. She was born and reared in Cranston’s Edgewood neighbourhood, and she has some Italian and Irish ancestry on her mother’s side.

Culpo didn’t complete his studies at Boston University after attending St. Mary Academy in Bay View. She started learning the cello in the second grade and has participated in the Bay View Orchestra, Rhode Island All-State Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble, and Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

She spent two summers studying at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina and has played with the Boston Accompanietta.

She originally competed in and won the Miss Rhode Island USA competition in 2012 before going on to win the Miss USA pageant on June 3, 2012.

Cranston, Rhode Island hosted a homecoming ceremony for Culpo in honour of her pageant victory on July 6, 2012.

The mayor of Cranston, Allan Fung, handed Culpo the key to the city during a ceremony that took place outside of the building. Culpo participated in the Sherri Hill fashion show on September 10, 2013, which was held at the Trump Tower in New York City. Culpo spent September 27 through October 6 in India.

She installed Gabriela Isler of Venezuela as her successor on November 9, 2013. In doing so, she joined Shawn Weatherly in 1981 and Chelsi Smith in 1996 as the third American Miss Universe to hand the crown to Venezuela.
